Vibrant retro look and sweet soft "feel"
I received this as an unexpected gift and absolutely love it. I lived in LA for many years and miss it - including the kitsch and long long history, and everything else. I'd never heard of Monkey Island, but what a treat this shirt is. I learned something (a lot of things) and get this - the shirt truly goes with everything. I've been wearing it everywhere since I received it, and my pals in Northwest Washington State all covet it. It really is as dynamic as it looks in the pictures. Best gift in a long time!
Cute monkey!
Very cute design! I get compliments from all my friends. The material is super soft and doesn’t shrink in the wash. My grandkids are very jealous of my “Monkey Land” shirt.
No monkeying around:
These T-shirts are immediately soft and comfortable and bound to be conversation starters! Great historic matchbook artwork!
Monkeys!
I thought I would be happy with my "Cocktails in the Kwan Yin Temple" shirt---wonderful L.A. history---but "Monkey Island" tops it. Too funny! To think there was such a place. . .boggles the mind. When I wear the shirt outside, people keep asking me where Monkey Island is---really---and I have to explain that it's long gone. But then I add, "we make our own monkey island." Keep this great stuff coming.
Vintage LA!
I love vintage L.A. anything! I had no idea that Monkey Island existed but it's such a cool piece of Hollywood history and fantastic shirt! Love everything about it ... design, colors, and soft t-shirt. I'll be back!
Monkey Island was a Los Angeles theme park and general oddity that opened in 1938. Located at 3300 Cahuenga Boulevard, it was a mere 2 blocks away from the legendary Hollywood Bowl. The park featured a massive, artificially created mountain that was surrounded by a moat and inhabited by hundreds of monkeys which roamed around freely. As the matchbook says,” No bars, no cages, no danger.” Monkey Island closed in the early 1940’s and although it’s not clear why, it’s theorized that it was due to people having less to spend on amusement during World War 2.
